We love fish. Fish are our business, our passion, and our livelihood. We are not alone. Globally, seafood provides the livelihood for over 500 million people. Perhaps more importantly, according to the United Nations, seafood provides critical protein for over 2.5 billion people world-wide. In many developing countries fish provides over 50% of the animal protein consumed.

Fish stocks remain under pressure across the globe. Some, like the Atlantic cod, are in complete collapse, a result of wanton over-fishing. Others, like pacific white sea bass, also near collapse by the 1960s, are now a model of sustainable fishing practices, and the population has made a complete recovery.

We feel a deep responsibility to promote and support only environmentally responsible scientifically sustainable fisheries. Clearly the stakes are huge, and when it comes the health of the oceans, and the life they contain, we are all stake-holders. You can do your part by purchasing and consuming seafood only when you can verify it has been sourced from a responsible, sustainable fishery. This is often difficult, as the final purveyer, whether it be a restaurant, supermarket, or fish market, may not have done the necessary homework to verify the sustainability of their sources. However, when you purchase fresh seafood from Kanaloa for home delivery, you can be sure our sources have been subjected to a rigorous, and scientifically sound evaluation to ensure they follow current sustainability best practices; both in terms of the fish they take, and the manner used to take them.

Kanaloa is the only International Organization of Standardization certified seafood company in North America. We earned our ISO 14001 certification through regular 3rd party audits of our environmental management practices, and our continuous effort to reduce the size of the environmental footprint of our entire business. You can trust Kanaloa to provide the finest, fresh seafood available, and to ensure it arrives at your door by the most sustainable and environmentally responsible path.

The southeast regional office of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is responsible for over-site of the Gulf of Mexico fisheries, charged with enforcing regulations designed to ensure sustainable harvests and to protect the environment from destructive fishing techniques. Shrimp, reef fish such as grouper and red snapper, and migratory species such as mackerel all come under NOAA’s jurisdiction.

NOAA also has a role in the oil exploration permit process as part of the required environmental impact studies. Unfortunately the Minerals Management Service has long been granting waivers for those studies, limiting NOAA and other environmental organizations role in the permitting process. We are now reaping the consequences of this lax to non-existent governmental over-site as a massive, in fact the most massive in US history, oil spill spreads its toxic sludge across the gulf. This environmental disaster threatens to undue the effective sustainability efforts implemented by NOAA, and to possibly destroy, severely diminish, or contaminate the gulf population of numerous food species.

Oysters in particular will be egregiously affected. According to USA Today the Gulf of Mexico currently supplies some 67% of the oysters consumed nationally. As one of natures filtering devices, oysters are not only delicious, but a vital purification component of the ecosystems in which they live. Whether or not the spill wipes out the oyster beds, the petrochemicals spilling into the gulf will undoubtedly leave them severely, even dangerously toxically contaminated.

The gulf also supplies over 25% of our Red Snapper, a popular food fish who’s population is already under stress and thus very closely managed. Non-migratory reef fishes, they are extremely vulnerable to contamination from the gulf spill.

Neither our oysters, nor our red snapper is sourced from the Gulf of Mexico. When you buy fresh red snapper, or buy fresh oysters from Kanaloa Seafood, you can be sure they have been harvested sustainably, and from pure uncontaminated waters, or environmentally sound aquafarms.

For some species the gulf provides only a small percentage of the total consumed by Americans. For instance only 4% of our shrimp originates in the gulf. That, however, should make no one sanguine. The devastation heaped on gulf shrimpers, barely recovered from Katrina, is catastrophic. At Kanaloa, we believe we all have a stake in the global seafood industry. Regardless of our personal reliance on a particular gulf species, we all experience real harm when such a large and productive ecosystem suffers at the hands of man.

KANALOA SEAFOOD

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD DELIVERED FRESH TO YOUR HOME.

With a PHD in Oceanography from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Don Disraeli and his wife Randee, a former researcher at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, take a scientific approach to sustainable seafood. This solid scientific grounding helps Kanaloa Seafood ensure that the fishery management practices and harvesting methods of their source fisheries are truly sustainable.

In operation since 1983, the Disraeli’s are not late jumpers onto the Green, Sustainable- Seafood bandwagon. In fact Randee and Don are some of the folks who painted that wagon green in the first place. Kanaloa Seafood has, from the beginning, recognized the vital importance of reducing the environmental footprint of the entire seafood industry. Always seeking to maintain the highest environmental standards throughout every aspect of their own business from procurement to processing and from packaging to delivery, the Disraelis have also worked tirelessly to educate and encourage their partners throughout the supply chain to continuously work to reduce the environmental impact of the global seafood industry. Now you can do your part. Ensure the seafood you buy is harvested from a truly sustainable source, in an environmentally responsible manner, by relying on Kanaloa Seafood whenever you want to buy fresh seafood, and have it delivered over night.

The Disraelis continue to demonstrate Kanaloa Seafood’s commitment to a comprehensive environmental program through compliance with the International Business Standard, ISO 14001. ISO14001 represents a set of rigorous environmental standards, developed with the cooperation of over 100 countries, aimed at the continuous improvement of the environmental management of the seafood industry. Periodically and independently audited for compliance, Kanaloa Seafood is the only seafood purveyor in Europe or North America to be ISO 14001 certified.

This unparalleled commitment to environmental stewardship and superior quality guarantees every home delivery from Kanaloa Seafood was harvested in a environmentally responsible manner, from a certified sustainable fishery, and handled with the utmost care in a state of the art preparation and delivery process.

SEAFOOD VENDOR ANNOUNCED FOR OXBOW PUBLIC MARKET

Napa’s Public Market Signs Kanaloa Seafood to Newly Opened Market

December 24, 2007, Napa, CA – Oxbow Public Market, newly opened to the public on Saturday, December 15th, 2007, has announced the addition of its much-anticipated seafood vendor, Kanaloa Seafood, the heralded environmentally responsible seafood purveyor out of Santa Barbara, California. Kanaloa Seafood has signed a lease to operate the Market’s retail seafood operation. Kanaloa is the only ISO 14001 Seafood Company in North America. ISO 14001 certification is a framework following international standards which helps organizations to better manage the impact of their activities on the environment and to demonstrate sound environmental management standards.

“Kanaloa Seafood is a great addition to the public market.” stated Steve Carlin, founder and CEO of Oxbow Public Market. “From the beginning, locals have been anxious for us to announce our seafood vendor. We have been extremely critical in our search for the right artisan to fill this space and I believe we have hit the jackpot with Kanaloa. Visitors and shoppers at the market are going to be ecstatic with the breadth and quality of their seafood selections…it will be worth the wait,” Carlin added.

Since 1983, Kanaloa has fished the waters of the world for premium seafood. Owners Don Disraeli, PhD biologist, and Randee Disraeli, former researcher at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, have researched worldwide sources firsthand and have cultivated an outstanding network of seafood suppliers from Alaska to New Zealand. At Oxbow Public Market, Kanaloa will offer a full-service seafood market, providing the highest quality seafood and related items to locals and customers throughout the United States. Shellfish and locally caught fish will be featured.

Don and Randee Disraeli were trained by a Japanese fishing family who had been perfecting the art of seafood for the past three generations. Their approach combines traditional Japanese techniques with current scientific knowledge, pursuing quality at every step in the process.

“We are very much looking forward to opening at the Oxbow Public Market,” said Don & Randee Disraeli. “We hold all of our suppliers of seafood to the most stringent standards. We utilize innovative seafood storage and shipping techniques which exceed industry and government standards, putting Kanaloa in a class all its own. We are very excited to offer our seafood to the people of Napa Valley and couldn’t be more thrilled about the Oxbow Public Market,” the Disraelis added.

Oxbow Public Market opened December 15th, 2007, bringing artisan food, fine wines, and specialty shops to wine country residents and tourists alike. The Main Market Hall, located at 610 First Street in Napa, offers customers a variety of products, cafes and services. Taylor’s Automatic Refresher, the Fatted Calf charcuterie, and the Model Bakery – all housed adjacent to the main market hall – are due to open in early January 2008. Additional vendors in the main market hall, and farmers in the Market’s exterior year-round farm stands will continue to open in the coming weeks. In addition, the market is preparing to announce several new tenants, including a coffee roaster, casual market Cafe, and garden shop. The Market will be in full swing by Summer 2008.

Oxbow Public Market is located within the emerging Oxbow District of Napa and is poised to become the local gathering place for great food and wine in the Napa Valley and downtown Napa. The 40,000 square foot marketplace, which includes a scenic outdoor deck with seating along the Napa River, features a diverse tenant mixture of local food vendors, artisan cafes and organic farm stands. Oxbow Public Market is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 6:00pm Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm. Spring/Summer expanded hours will be Monday through Saturday from 9:00am to 9:00pm, Sunday to 8:00pm.
